Irving Sulmeyer foresaw the need for specialists in the field of bankruptcy and corporate reorganizations when he founded the firm over 50 years ago. The firm's reputation has been built on its achievement of successful results for debtors, creditors and other parties-in-interest in many complex chapter 11 cases. Our attorneys are highly knowledgeable and experienced in all phases of insolvency proceedings -- including debt restructurings and workouts outside of bankruptcy court, chapter 11 case strategy, motions for relief from the automatic stay, motions to dismiss improperly filed cases, motions for the appointment of chapter 11 trustees and examiners, cash collateral issues, determining the status and priority of liens, debtor-in-possession financings, bankruptcy issues relating to franchises and landlord-tenant relationships, administration of creditors' committees, negotiation and implementation of complex reorganization plans, bankruptcy court auction sales, bankruptcy court litigation (including suits to recover preferences and fraudulent transfers, discharge and dischargeability litigation, and contested plan confirmation hearings), secured transactions and acquisitions and sales of assets out of bankruptcy estates.
Our clients include banks and other institutional lenders, finance companies, insurance companies, commercial real estate landlords, franchisors, trade creditors, creditors' committees, manufacturers, retailers, health care organizations, and media and entertainment companies. In 1993, the firm filed the first chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy case in the Central District of California on behalf of the Ventura Port District. The firm also played a significant role in the Orange County bankruptcy case through its representation of the Orange County Transportation Authority -- the agency with the largest financial interest in the county's ill-fated investment pool.
